about

New cool in group vocal jazz: With their songbook of originals, Uptown Vocal Jazz Quartet has put their sublime signature on the rare, joyful sound of singers swinging together in instrumental fashion. Backed by a stellar rhythm and horn section, the singers embrace the American Songbook genre while stretching group vocal jazz beyond standards and taking the listener on an exciting journey through their own original palette of delightfully literate lyrics, vocalese, Basie-infused swing, bop, scat, lush ballads, blues, cool jazz, hot samba, and even classic soul. The album announces itself with “He Was The Cat,” the story of the late Eddie Jefferson sung as an original vocalese tribute, which was immediately heralded as a tour de force by Eddie’s friend and colleague, alto saxophonist Richie Cole, who subsequently recorded an album with UVJQ (Vocal Madness). UVJQ breaks new ground with every original song and constantly reminds us that the wit of a great lyric combined with the panache of four voices blending together (as if a horn section) is a treat for the ears and the soul.
